Legacy and Ego

In recent days I have been mulling over the notion of legacy.

How do you want to be remembered?

It is a very interesting subject to me.

Some people approach the notion of their legacy in very practical, pragmatic terms.

Should everyone get an equal share.... should some inherit more?  Or even this is for my ego as oppose to a selfless act.

Or is it still more about how people remember you as a person rather than what you want to leave to the world? In other words do you want to elevate your own importance or simply be you?

These questions are things you have to consider when you think about legacy.

Charities are quick to say you can talk to us about leaving us something in your legacy...

Others might decide I want to leave or create a legacy that people remember me by.

Both of these situations are ME centred.

Other people leave a legacy that are OTHERS centred.

My dear father in law, now promoted to Glory, was a formidable man,.

A strategic business man, with a huge heart and Godly principles.

He was also a force of nature, a terrible tease but completely adorable.

When I met him at first, he asked me do you think you will return to mission? Will you expect my son to pay your way?

I replied that would never be my intention - we would be a partnership.

Little did I know then that I would return to mission and OTHERS expected my husband to hold that burden.

I always had a tentmaking job, as we are a partnership. (Although it would perhaps have been easier if the yoke had been spread more evenly.)

You can't change what has happened.

Back to my dear selfless father in law.

He cared about God, family, people, the environment and sustainability..

He was awarded a Lifetime achievement award from the National Recycling Awards in 2005.

A pioneer, a compassionate man, dedicated to his family and to God.

Some might even say - ahead of his time.

One of my father in laws legacies is Salvation Army Textile recycling banks.

He was crucial in making them visible in most car parks.

Encouraging us to recycle and redistribute.

Tackling reducing waste and combating poverty.

Very much others focused.

So when you think of legacy.... what is your motivation? Ego or being servant hearted?
